Charles "Chuck" Sunn Obituary

Charles (Chuck) Sunn, age 71, was born the day after Christmas to Cecile and Albert Sunn, Sr. With them he found a warm, loving, and hard-working family. Loved by his sister, Julie Stover, and his brothers Larry (Margie), Russell (Sandy), Albert Jr. (Joanne), and Duane.  They said as a young man he had a temper.  He must have outgrown it later in life.  Most never saw that side of him.

In 1965 his parents moved into a new neighborhood and owned and operated Sunn’s Tap.  There, at 14 years old, he met the love of his life, Nikki.  At 15, he told her he was going to marry her; at 19 he did just that.  They were blessed with three beautiful daughters, Jackie, Julie, and Mary.  He often liked to say “All of my daughters are Sunn’s (sons).”

Chuck was a proud Marine and served his country from 1970 to 1976. His working career began as an assistant food store manager at Gem Foods on 13th & Cleveland, then as a truck driver for Century Motor Freight.  After taking a piece of a roof off a Pizza Hut during his first year of driving a semi, they decided to put him into management where he worked in the transportation industry as a dispatcher, assistant terminal manager, and terminal manager at various trucking firms for over 30 years.  Chuck excelled at it.  He also worked in other facets of the industry, working for W.I.S. Logistics and finishing the last 10 years of his career at the J.C. Penney warehouse on 118th & Burleigh. When they closed; he retired.

He was the proud grandfather of Vanessa and Alicia Zepeda, Gino (Marisela) and Carlos Carbajal, Sydney Orlowski, and Jeremy and Parker Sunn. He was the beloved great-grandpa to Emiliano, Gloriana, and Valentino Carbajal. Chuck was also very much loved by Nikki’s family, especially her brothers and sisters.

Chuck was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, and friend.  He was an excellent carpenter and loved hunting and Memorial Day weekends at Whiskey Jack Camp with his brothers-in-law, playing sheepshead and cribbage at the Wilson Park Senior Center, watching old TV westerns or Mafia movies, and spending time with his family.  He was the king of “dad jokes”.

Throughout 52 years of marriage, he showed his devotion and commitment jokingly telling others “I like a woman who makes up my mind”.  He set a very high bar to follow for the men in his daughters’ lives.

Years of smoking took their toll.  He developed lung cancer in 2014, had part of a lung and his right kidney removed, chose no other treatment, and for 8 years lived a full and happy life.  The cancer returned to his liver in December 2021. Again, he chose not to do chemotherapy and faced the cancer on his own terms. He knew what he was doing and enjoyed another 17 months without complications. But cancer eventually won. After a short 3-week illness, his cancer battle ended peacefully on May 25, 2023.

Our family will always be grateful to the caring staff at AccentCare Hospice for their kindness and compassion and for making his last days comfortable.

Memorials can be made in Chuck’s name to the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 434, or to St. Matthew Parish in Oak Creek.

“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails” -- 1 Corinthians 13:7-8
