Roger Caryl Ward rose in glory from this life Sept.1 at age 89. Cherished by family, Roger was pre-deceased by beloved wife of 56 years, June and sons Roger Jr., and Stephen. He is survived by Son, Geoffrey (Valerie); Grandchildren Kiersten (Jeff), Sarah, Justin (Aliese), Tyler (Claudia), Whitney (Blake), Alex, Andrew, and Zachary; Great Granddaughters Aubrey, Joey, and Evie.
Roger enjoyed a 35-year career with The Travelers Insurance Company, mostly in Milwaukee. Upon retirement he pursued a passion of watercolor art. In what he referred to as a ‘humorist’ style, he created delightful images of animal characters, landscapes, and people in a variety of contexts. He also enjoyed writing, a talent discovered early as editor of an Army publication during his years of service, stationed in Japan.
Known for a gentle demeaner and kindness, Roger was loved by many and will be greatly missed. He was a devout and active parishioner for decades at Christ Church Whitefish Bay, St. Matthias Minocqua, St. Francis Eagle River, and St. Christopher’s River Hills. He was keenly focused on literacy for children, and was one of the original Homework Club volunteers in Milwaukee - a ministry that later evolved into Our Next Generation.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the tremendous care Roger received in his final months at the loving hands of hospice professionals from Seasons Palliative Care. Finding it easy to befriend Roger, they brought great joy and comfort to him in his final days.
A Celebration of Roger’s life will be held at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 7845 N. River Road, River Hills, WI on Saturday, September 14th at 1:00PM, with reception at the church to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial remembrance in his honor be made to St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in support of The Norvell Commons Project.
